Hint 3 – Processor

No matter what you decided to buy, laptop or local pc, you should look for certain things referring the speed of your new computer. Speed is always directly connected to the integrated periphery.

One of these components is the processor, which is as the name says responsible for processing the different processes. The faster your processor is, the faster the different processes can be processed. Nevertheless the processor is not the only component responsible for the system’s speed.

There are two main fabricators in the processor market:

There is on the one hand the actual leader Intel, producing his Pentium chipsets. Intel has numerated the different generations of its products beginning with the Pentium I, followed by Pentium II etc. But pay attention, because there are also some processors who stand between two generations. For example the Celeron technology: the Celeron with 1 gigahertz is not as fast as a Pentium III with 1 gigahertz, although it is newer.

Furthermore Intel has the Centrino technology especially build for laptops / notebooks.

On the other hand there is AMD, Intel’s rival. Unfortunately they haven’t chosen as easy names as Intel did. They called their models Athlon. Still you have to pay double attention, because AMD has as well as Intel these special versions of their models. They’re called Duron and have the same characteristics: 1 gigahertz here does not equal 1 gigahertz in a normal AMD. In addition the names of the processors are a bit weird. The AMD Athlon 2000+ seems to have 2000 MHz but has only 1800 MHz. So watch twice before you think you know how much megahertz you get.

If you directly compare the two models there is no big difference, sometimes the AMD is faster, and sometimes Intel is faster.

Hint 4 – RAM

Ram is used to help the processor do his job. This is achieved by using the Ram as a temporary memory. The more you have of it, the better for your performance.

If you just want to work with your pc, the ram’s size doesn’t matter that much. Nevertheless is should not be chosen too small.

There are two dominating kinds of Ram on the market:

  • the a little slower and cheaper kind (SD-RAM)
  • the fast and expensive kind (DDR-RAM)

There is another difference: No-name-Memory and Memory from a brand. Which one you buy is up to you, because the differences are tiny.
